Honors Program Assistant Positions Available

Application

Student participation in the direction of the Penn State Behrend Honors/Schreyer Scholars Programs is essential.

Honors Program Assistants (HPA's) act as liaisons between honors students and the program's administration. They help to provide intellectually stimulating seminars and events to encourage out-of-classroom learning within the broader university setting. HPA's work to establish lines of communication among students, faculty, and administrators. Additionally, HPA's act as student advocates and information sources for Schreyer Scholars and Behrend Honors students.

Specific duties include:

Seminar/Event Development

  • HPA's help to organize intellectually and/or culturally enriching seminars and events. Their themes can be chosen by the HPA's or the Honors Coordinator. They may include dinner-seminars with faculty, visiting scholars, artists, and public figures, trips, tours, performances, thematic series, etc.

  • HPA's help to organize appropriate social gatherings, off-campus trips and community service projects in cooperation with the Honors Coordinator.

  • At least one HPA will work closely with the RA and the Almy Hall Council in Almy Hall to coordinate activities.

  • HPA's may be expected to oversee activities for the Honors "Adopt-A-Class Program" with Diehl Elementary School.

Contact With Students

  • HPA's will help with orientation activities for new Scholars/Honors students at the beginning of each academic year; this may mean arriving on campus before fall semester begins.

  • HPA's will help to develop programs in accordance with the interests of honors students. Student participation in the planning of events is vital.

  • HPA's assist with a newsletter detailing upcoming events. The newsletter is published on a schedule approved by the Honors Coordinator.

  • HPA's help to set policy, especially as student advocates, for students in the Scholars/Honors program.

Administrative Duties

  • HPA's will keep the Honors Coordinator informed of their activities as well as student interests, problems and concerns and will set up a schedule of regular meetings with the Honors Coordinator.

  • HPA's will spend an average of about ten hours per week on duties as assigned. This time commitment may vary somewhat as needed.

  • HPA's must represent the interests of the commuter as well as on-campus students in the program and for those students living in the Almy Hall Living and Learning Center.

  • HPA's may be asked to participate in honors receptions and open houses for new honors student recruitment.

  • HPA's may be asked to telephone prospective students who have applied to Penn State Behrend and are eligible for honors.

Evaluation, Continuance and Remuneration

  • Evaluation of HPA's is ongoing and conducted by the Honors Coordinator. The evaluation assesses an HPA's performance against stated expectations in this position description.

  • HPA positions are on a yearly basis; however, the appointments can be renewed or terminated based on job performance.

  • Remuneration for HPA's will be one-third of room and board.
