Production History

In the early 1960s, Charles Griffith and Roger Corman had an idea to write and shoot a film on a decrepit theatre set that was about to be torn down. Two weeks after their idea was envisioned, they completed their movie and called it Little Shop of Horrors . In 1982, their screenplay was adapted into a musical theatre piece and performed in a tiny New York Off-Off Broadway theatre. It was such a success that it moved “up” to Off-Broadway and continued its run for five years. Then, in 1986, Hollywood stars (such as Steve Martin) joined the cast to create a second movie of Little Shop of Horrors , based on the musical. In the fall of 2003, the play was revived and opened on Broadway, where it is currently running.

It's no wonder that Little Shop of Horrors has had a long and successful production history. This play has it all—melodrama, great music, comedy, horror, and themes of love, vulnerability, self-destruction and greed. In short, it is a fun and challenging theatrical piece to perform in any venue, including the Behrend Studio Theatre.
