WORKING
From the book by Studs Terkel
Adapted by Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso
Songs by Craig Carnelia, Micki Grant, Mary Rodgers, Susan Bikenhead, Stephen Schwartz, and James Taylor

April 2005

Director's Note

In the 1970s, Studs Terkel interviewed hundreds of working American men and women of different ethnicities and ages and documented their voices in the award-winning book, Working. Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso then adapted this book as a musical, keeping intact all the words of those interviewed. As a theatrical piece, Working is the ideal project to take on. The written script is essentially a series of monologues and songs, so it allows a performing company the ultimate freedom in deciding how to theatricalize and put the piece together. It is also a truly ensemble-based script, in that it gives actors the opportunity to play multiple roles while being a part of a larger unified picture. And finally, it is a musical that celebrates the working community. The objective of our production, similarly, is to bring attention to and honor the words of Studs Terkel's interviewees.
