Student Employment

Prior to searching for a job on campus it is important to determine if you have Federal Work-Study, State Work-Study, or neither.

Federal Work-Study

Federal Work-Study is a financial aid program available to students with a documented financial need. This is not an aid source that students can deduct from their bill; funds are earned as the student works. For a current list of on campus work-study positions at Behrend, go to eLion and click on "Work-Study Job Search."  There are also a number of off campus work-study positions in the Erie area.

Penn State Behrend also participates in America Reads, the opportunity for Federal Work Study recipients to earn money reading to and tutoring preschool and elementary school children.

Students awarded Federal Work Study will have their awards cancelled if they do not secure a job within the first few weeks of classes each semester. Students can place a "hold" on their Federal Work Study awards on eLion if they need more time finding a position.

State Work-Study

The State Work-Study Program (SWSP) provides Pennsylvania students with employment opportunities in high-technology and community-service fields. Through SWSP you gain career-related, on-the-job work experience while earning money to help pay for your higher education. You may work up to 40 hours per week during term breaks and the summer and no more than 20 hours per week while classes are in session.

To qualify you must: Be a Pennsylvania resident. Be enrolled at least half-time (6 – 11 credits) in a PHEAA-approved higher education institution, in a program of study at least two years in length. Be a State Grant or subsidized federal loan recipient. Be able to benefit from a career-related work experience in a high-tech or community-service job. Not owe a State Grant refund or have defaulted on any student loan.
