Behrend Baseball
Sweeps Doubleheader Against Bethany Bison
Penn State
Behrend baseball concluded the regular season Thursday, May 3 at
home picking up two victories and some momentum heading into the
AMCC tournament. The blue and white took game one 6-1 and secured
the sweep in game two with a 3-0 victory.
The Bison got on the board first in game one off an RBI single in
the top of the second inning, but Behrend pitcher Steve Miller
(Union City/Union City) was able to get out of the jam without any
further damage as Bethany left two stranded. Behrend answered in
the bottom half of the inning with two runs off a sacrifice fly and
a double steal. Behrend struck again in the sixth when Adam Martin
(Rochester/Rochester) lined a double with the bases juiced that
scored two and put the score at 4-1. A sacrifice fly by Andrew
McNelly (Somerset/Somerset) made it 5-1, and the blue and white
would add another to make it 6-1.
In game
two Behrend put up three runs in the third when David Miller (St.
Marys/St. Marys) knocked a double down the third base line. Josh
Fyffe (Fredonia/Sharpsville), Jon Gray (State College/State
College), and Jason Bartlett (Erie/Iroquois) scored the runs for Behrend.
Those are all the runs the pitching staff would need as Behrend got
strong performances from five pitchers. Fran Haus (Wexford/North
Allegheny) started the game off with three scoreless innings,
striking out two. Haus was followed by Mike Leo (Harmony/Central
Catholic), Eric Nachreiner (Pittsburgh/North Hills), David Koerbel
(Pittsburgh/Central Catholic) and Ryan Smith (Franklin/Franklin) who
each pitched one inning to combine for the shutout victory.
The first-round of the
AMCC Tournament is a win two-out-of-three series. #4 Behrend (27-10)
will host # 5 Pitt-Bradford (20-12) on Saturday, May 5. Games are slated
for 10:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and the if necessary game will be at 4:00
p.m.
The AMCC top two
seeds earn byes while the sixth seed travels to play the third seed and the
