Behrend Men and Women Each Grab a Third Place Finish at Westminster Invitational

Behrend outdoor track & field had their strongest finishes of the year at the Westminster Invitational on Saturday, April 21.  The women were led by Virginia Rogers-Owens (Washington, DC/P.L. Dunbar) and finished third with 91 team points while the men were led by Kevin Gorny (Erie/McDowell) and Dan Mitchell (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) and also took third with 106 points.

Rogers-Owens won both the 100 and 200 meter dashes.  She ran the 100 in 12.67 seconds and the 200 in 25.94 seconds, qualifying her for the ECAC championships in each event.  Kim Chapman (Cranberry Township/Seneca Valley) and Dana Turley (Sarver/Freeport) dominated the women's 400 hurdles event.  Chapman set a new Behrend record, winning the event with a time of 1:05.51, Turley followed in at 1:06.26.  The 4 x 100 meter relay team qualified for the ECACs with a third place performance of 51.91 seconds.  Jessica Kloecker (Waterford/Fort LeBoeuf) rounded out the ECAC qualifiers for the women, she took second in the high jump when she leaped 5' 3.0".

Cross country star, Kevin Gorny took the 300 meter steeplechase event (10:08.53), giving the men ten points.  Mitchell added ten more to the men's total when he chucked the javelin an event best 167 feet.  Elsewhere for the men, Jon McKinney (Summerville/Union) placed second in triple jump, with a combined distance of 44' 4.25".  Michael Ferraro (Erie/Harborcreek) ran the 100 meter dash in a third place time of 11.34 seconds.  In relay action, the men's 4 x 100 meter relay squad grabbed second with a time of 43.29 seconds.

Next up for track & field will be the Mason Dixon Championships at Frostburg State on May 4.
