Behrend Track & Field Opens Indoor Season at Spartan Relays

The Penn State Behrend track & field team opened the 2008 indoor season by traveling to the Case Western Spartan Relays on Saturday, January 26.  Both the Behrend men and women had solid performances to open the season as four new Behrend records were set.

For the men, Mike Ferraro (Erie/Harborcreek) put forth a strong showing, setting two school records on the day.  In the 200 Meter Dash, Ferraro posted a time of 23.22 seconds, good for a school record.  In the 55 Meter Dash, the sophomore's mark of 6.51 seconds also set a new Behrend record.  Sophomore sprinter Doug Stevenson (Sharpsville/Sharpsville) ran a time of 6.64 seconds, which was also better than the previous school record mark.

Freshman John Bowman (Clearfield/Clearfield) also broke a school record with a distance of 27' 2.75" in the Men Weight Throw event.

Also on the day, a women's record fell as Cassie Manelick (Youngsville/Youngsville) set a Behrend record with a distance of 28' 11.25" in the Women Weight Throw event.

Behrend also had others with strong performances as both Evern Lee (Bronx, NY/Wings Academy) and Ronson Mazany (Ashville, NY/Panama Central) were the top Division III finishers in the Men's Triple Jump event.  Lee finished second overall with a jump of 41' 7" while Mazany's mark of 41' 3" was good for third place overall.  Many other Behrend Lions came through with top five finishes in a variety of other events on the day.

The Spartan Relays were not a team-scored event, but the blue and white grabbed some early season momentum with strong finishes and the first ever collegiate competition for many of the team's newcomers.  Coach Greg Cooper said, "I was pleased with our performance as a team to start the season.  There is a lot of potential with this group and we have a great opportunity for lots of success this season."

Behrend track and field is back in action on Saturday, February 9.  The blue and white will travel to compete in the Mount Union Invitational which begins at 10:00 a.m.
