Our Approach to Simulation
The NTLSC employs a collaborative approach to the development and
delivery of simulation-based education, which is the cornerstone for all simulation-based activities at Penn State Behrend. This model, developed by the NTLSC Coordinator Nick Miehl, capitalizes on the strengths and talents of both the teaching faculty as well as the lab staff. The course faculty (content expert) works closely with the NTLSC Coordinator (simulation expert) to collaboratively develop realistic simulation scenarios and simulation-based activities. The content experts provide the vision and detail for the scenario/activity, while the lab coordinator handles the technical aspects of creating the scenario/activity (simulator programming, active learning design etc…). Similarly, the content expert facilitates the simulated clinical experience and subsequently debriefs the learners while the simulation center staff (NTLSC Coordinator or Simulation Tech) operates the simulation and audio/visual recording equipment. Maximizing the strengths and abilities of the faculty and staff in this manner helps to maintain optimal fidelity in the simulated clinical experience.
