Injection Molding with Liquid Silicone Rubber

Fee:  $700
Instructor:  Brad Johnson

Who Should Attend:

Processors, product designers, mold designers, or anyone involved in, or considering becoming involved in, the production of injection molded silicone parts will benefit from attending this workshop.

Course Description:

This course will split time between the classroom and demonstrations of the processing equipment.  Part and mold design considerations as well as processing will be reviewed. An overview of equipment used as well as molding strategies specific to liquid silicone rubber (LSR) will be provided.

Seminar Outline:

  • Introduction to LSR Molding

  • Molding Machine Considerations

  • The Material Feed System

  • The Mold

  • Injection Strategies

  • Process Set-up and Troubleshooting

  • Reference

Educational Goals:

A basic understanding of the materials, processes, and equipment used to make LSR parts should be gained by attending this course.  Two-stage molding, separating first stage from pack and hold, will be used to demonstrate how process variables affect the molded parts. Demonstrations of the process set-up and equipment used will be provided in the processing lab.  In-cavity pressure and temperature sensors will also demonstrate some of the unique processing characteristics of LSR. Unique part and mold design issues will also be covered.
