Youth Education OutreachPenn State Behrend recognizes that successful communities and organizations start with young people who are motivated, educated, and excited to learn. Behrend's K-12 programs give area youth the opportunity to use the college's resources to participate in unique and exciting learning experiences.

  • Children's Water Festival: Penn State Behrend's Children's Water Festival will be held Thursday, May 18, at the college. The festival seeks to educate fifth grade students about the importance of water, including ground water, surface water, watersheds, water quality, and water conservation through dynamic, interactive activities. The students will learn that everyone has a role in water conservation and environmental protection. 
  • College for KidsThis very popular program has been providing summer enrichment opportunities to children in the Erie region for over 20 years. A diverse selection of one-week classes ranging from art and music to engineering and science are offered to children and teens ages 6-14.
  • Engineering K-12 Outreach CenterCoordinates the school's Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) outreach activities to school-aged youth.
  • FIRST LEGO League: First LEGO League provides students ages 9-14 with a hands-on, interactive robotics program in a sports-like atmosphere. Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, is an affiliate partner with FIRST and hosts a championship tournament each fall.
  • GE Girls @ Penn State Behrend: GE Girls is a week-long STEM camp for sixth and seventh grade girls in Erie's Public Schools. Young women are paired with female mentors from GE Transportation and exposed to topics such as robotics, electronic circuits, chemistry, structures, energy, and more!
  • High School Academy (HSA): Penn State Behrend High School Academy is a one-day summer program that offers hands-on career exploration opportunities across multiple disciplines. 
  • Math OptionsThis day-long program has been designed to provide information on careers in mathematics, engineering, technology, and the sciences to young women in grades 7 and 8 at a time when they are making important academic decisions.
  • MCE/WISE: Minority College Experience and Women In Science and Engineering are free summer programs designed for academically talented high school students to enroll in a university credit course with regularly enrolled college students the summer before their senior year in high school.
  • Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS): PJAS is a statewide organization of junior and senior high school students designed to stimulate and promote interest in science through the development of research projects and investigations. The regional competition is held at Penn State Behrend.
  • Physics Day: A day of fun and Physics for high school students presented by Penn State Behrend's School of Science.
  • Regional Common In-Service Day: Regional Common In-Service Days are held at Penn State Behrend on a variety of topics and designed for educators to earn Act 48 credits.
  • Science Olympiad: Science Olympiad is one of the premier science competitions in the nation involving over 7,000 teams in all 50 states where teams of middle school and high school students engage in exciting and rigorous science competitions which are aligned with both PA science standards and national education standards.
  • Scout Events
    • Boy Scouts Go to College: Boy Scouts attend workshops at Penn State Behrend, where they earn merit badges in various areas.
    • Explorers: The Explorers program provides career exploration opportunities at Penn State Behrend for young people ages 14 and up. For more information contact Jared Magoon, Boy Scouts of America.
    • Girl Scout Saturdays: Girl Scout Saturday, hosted by the student chapter of the Society of Women Engineers each spring, introduces girls to different engineering career fields. Contact for more information. 
  • STEM Fair: Explore science technology engineering and math opportunities and participate in hands on demonstrations; sponsored by GE Transportation and Penn State Behrend.
  • Summer Sports Camps: The athletic department hosts various summer camps for young athletes.
  • 21st Century Kids: 21st Century Kids is designed to bring youth from rural populations to Penn State Behrend and provide exposure to opportunities available through post-secondary education. Warren County students participate in day-long, hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math workshops taught by Behrend Faculty, tour campus, and experience a college setting.
  • Women in Business: Women in Business Day at Penn State Behrend's Black School of Business is designed for eleventh- and twelfth-grade girls. This program will introduce participants to many facets of business, and encourage them to explore their interests in business related careers.
  • Women in Engineering: Women in Engineering (WIE) is an outreach program for tenth and eleventh grade girls held every year in November designed to introduce girls to careers in engineering.
  • Yahn Planetarium: Yahn Planetarium, located in the School of Science complex on the Behrend campus, provides programming for student groups.
  • Young People's Chorus of Erie (YPC Erie): Penn State Behrend's Young People's Chorus brings together young singers from all across Erie County with the goal to provide every child in our community the opportunity to further their personal and artistic growth and to foster cross-cultural understanding.
