FastStart Behrend is a mentoring program designed to help first-year students from African American, American Indian, Asian American, and Latino/Hispanic backgrounds, as well as those students who simply want to get their college careers off to a “fast start.”
The program establishes a mentoring triad between a faculty or staff member, a Behrend alum (anywhere in the world) and the first year student. This framework provides a great opportunity for everyone.
- New students are able to consult and get valuable advice from former students and current faculty/staff.
- The Alumni have an opportunity to share on the experience they have gained, not only as former Behrend students, but if employed, they may also share how it all connects to the professional world they are now experiencing.
- Faculty and staff are able to directly help students, thus promoting a welcoming campus environment and increasing the chances for students’ success!
There are no demands built into the program. Participants may take advantage of scheduled programs and activities, on or off campus events, or just engage in spontaneous interaction. Participants set their own parameters for involvement. Some may choose to develop a close, long-term relationship; others may simply "be there" as needed. It’s up to you!
FastStart Behrend is sponsored by the Office of Educational Equity and Diversity Programs and the Penn State Behrend Alumni Society in partnership with the FastStart Program at University Park.
