Creating and Maintaining an Internship: Best Practices Guide (booklet)

If you have a position that is not related to an academic major, including manual labor, babsitting, typing, etc., please e-mail it to recruitbehrend@psu.edu or fax it to 814-898-6455.  These  positions are posted on a job board outside of the office.  They will not be approved on the Nittany Lion Recruiting System.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE POSTING:

  • Although financial compensation is not required, a larger selection of applicants will likely be available when it is offered. State Work Study funds may also be available to assist with the payment of interns.  To find out about these programs and how to be approved, visit the PHEAA Web site.  Once you have been approved through PHEAA, you must contact Penn State, University Park, at 814-865-6301 to finalize the process.

  • Determine:
-whether your organization will compensate the intern.
-the days and hours that will be required for the internship. (Flexibility will be helpful to a student's academic schedule.)
-how long the internship will be. Most non-paid internships last only one semester.
-if you would like your internship to be on-going or a one-time experience. If your position is on-going, it will be advertised to Penn State Behrend students each semester on a regular basis. One-time experiences will be advertised for that semester only.

  • There is no guarantee that you will get an intern simply because you submitted a request.  Students decide whether or not they wish to pursue an intern job posting.

  • If you have a project that requires skills beyond that of an undergraduate, an MBA intern may be your solution! The Behrend MBA program is accredited by AACSB International.

Co-ops

Co-ops enable students to obtain a full year of work experience before graduating, and become more competitive in the job market.

  • Employers typically find it challenging to hire a student to work a full-time co-op outside of the Erie area to begin work in the fall/spring. The Penn State academic year is divided into fall, spring, and summer semesters. Students alternate two or three semesters of full-time employment with semesters of full-time course work at the university.

  • Co-ops may lengthen students' college careers by a semester or a year.

  • In many cases, students do not begin the co-op until after their sophomore year, ensuring that they have acquired the basic skills in the field and are ready to become productive members of the company.

  • A co-op is coordinated through the academic department and the CDC, and often involves assistance from the offices of the bursar, the registrar, financial aid, and housing.
